Asian side of Istanbul
Istanbul is a unique city which is founded on two continents as Asia and Europe. When tourists find out that they tend to think the Asian side of the city must be pretty different compared to European side on the levels of development, people, and the way of life. During my tours, I even heard the question if Chinese people live there or if they need a passport to pass on the other side. It is the same big city, under the same administration. No passport is needed or your lunch won’t be wonton soup. (Unless you search and find one Chinese restaurant on that side) The main difference between the sides is one being more residential to another. People generally prefer to live on Asian side since it is calmer, greener and offers newer housings. Most people work on the European side since it is more developed and has the most important commercial centers of the city. Not to forget, Istanbulites call the Asian side as ‘Anatolian’ side. When Turkish people emigrated from central Asia to Anatolia at the beginning of 10th century, they gave this name because Anatolia means ‘motherland’. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Istanbulites choose Asian side as residential to feel more at land of their mothers of the ancestors. Who knows..
