Henna night in Turkey

Henna night in Turkey
A young woman sitting in the circle of other women, her head covered with red ornate scarf. All other women keeps singing, circling and dancing around her timidly with lit candles carrying on their hands. It sounds more like an anthem; however it is a goodbye song. This is a henna night being held one or two nights before the young girl of the house gets married.

As an old tradition, even the girls in the big cities make this ceremony before their wedding day. The idea is to gather all women in the family, neighborhood and circle of friends. Sometimes at the same night friends of the groom also organize some other event similar to bachelor party. But what happens in henna night is more sentimental. There is a high chance at some level, bride and mother of her may burst into tears. While singing they put henna into palms of the bride-to-be with a coin of gold by the mother and mother-in-law. It is more like a ceremony of passing daughter to other family. After all that singing and crying, everything gets brighter and music starts for dancing! Sometimes they may have an open buffet for the ones who want to roll into Borek, Kısır and Baklava. No worries ladies, the rest of the night is all yours to dance and burn them all..
