Istanbul Tulip Festival, Every year in April
14 million tulips bloom every year in Istanbul between months of March and April. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has planted nearly one tulip for each one in the city every April since 2006. Every year at the beginning of spring Istanbul parks, avenues, gardens are nicely decorated with these tulips sometimes planting arranged like Turkish flag, butterfly or other geometric designs.
Tulip has significance in Turkish culture; it has symbolic meanings as love, love of the creator and love for everything that is created by Allah. Also the word ‘Allah’ is commonly seen as written in Arabic letters as tulip shape by the calligraphists of the time. Iconoclasm in Islam caused artist to use only flowers and geometrical designs, in the mosques you may see dozens of different tulip patterns.
Maybe hard to believe but first tulip bulbs were sent from Ottomans to Holland as a gift. Dutch people loved this flower so much; even they had one period of their history when they had Tulip-mania. There are myths that saying it was possible to buy a house with the price of hand full of tulip bulbs.
